Turning up the heat with the ‘Hot-One-Hundred’: Schwartz Gallery: London
As the temperatures keep rising, Schwartz Gallery has added to the summer heat wave through its show ‘HOT-ONE-HUNDRED’—showcasing 100 emerging contemporary artists in the UK.
Conceived and curated by Ismail Erbil & Patrick Michalopoulos, the exhibition makes reference to ranking systems seen in late-night popular music TV programmes and art world power lists, creating a ‘HOT-ONE-HUNDRED moment’ in the emerging UK contemporary art scene. Playfully mimicking the creation of power lists in the worlds of art, entertainment and business, HOT-ONE-HUNDRED satirises this ‘heat’ phenomenon while simultaneously becoming an agent for its proliferation.
The show contains a diverse mix of contemporary artists, representing a wide range of practices and media. Yet, in the impressive, cavernous space—one of the largest and longest-running of the current crop of artist-run spaces in London—the works sit side by side surprisingly well. Together, they create a rich snapshot of the vibrant contemporary art scene today. Well worth a look.
